The military of Wessex uses ALL tactics. We are not stuck in a box, but respond with what the situation calls for. Obviously when taking a city we won't be using formation marching, but sweeping/clearing tactics, for example.

Tier 9 - Militia and Levies
Militiamen are villeins or freemen who are called upon by Wessex to fight in battle when needed. When called, they are formally refered to as a "levy."
See: Militiamen
Tier 8 - Pedus
Both the Footman and Bowman hold the same millitary power in terms of rank. They are called differently to help squadron leaders differentiate what type of troops and how many they are controlling.
Footman
Footman are the most basic melee infantry units that are full-time soldiers. They recieve a small tax deduction; however, they must also attend 2 drills every week and are encourage to every drill during the week. Footman will be in units under the command of a squad leader and usually make up the front line of a formation.
Bowman
Bowman are the beginings of an Archer. Bowman are less skilled and are rookie archers. They will usually be lined up behind a formation of Footman or mixed in with that formation. Bowman, like Footman, are also required to drill twice a week and encouraged to attend every drill that week.
Tier 7 - Miles
Man-at-Arms
MaA's are the more experienced footmen. They are at the far right of the formation and lead a row which contains footman or bowman. To become a MaA you must have completed at least 12 basic or advanced drills and be deemed worthy.
Archer
Archers are at the same level as a Man-at-Arms and hold the same position in a formation if a MaA is not in the formation. They will most likely be in a squadron full of bowman and a few other archers and lead their rows as a MaA would.
To become a Archer you must at least have completed 12 basic or advanced drills and be deemed worthy.
Tier 6 - Serviens

Midshipmen
Midshipmen may stand as the ones giving orders to marines and seamen on different decks of the ship while higher officers control navigation and other issues.

Ranger
Ranger are the best archers or marksmen who have been hand selected by the forester to serve in his landwarding force. Rangers no longer serve in the rank and file of the archery units in warfare. Under the forester, their main duty is to patrol the lands and wilds of Wessex in search of poachers and raiding clans. Rangers are freemen. They answer only to the Forester and the Duke.
