Current revision

A freeman is someone who is not bound to a specific lord. However, they still owe their allegiance to the Duke and the King. They are able to work freely for themselves or do specific work in the government and pay fewer taxes than villeins. A citizen can be made a free man if he passes the yeoman exam for entry into service of the government or if he shows willingness and the ability to become a burgess and run his own business. Renowned or very wealthy freemen can also become the mayor of a village or town. Freemen include: heralds, clerks, burgesses and other specialized civil leaders.
