Definitely melee. I plan on focusing strongly on melee skills right off the bat, most likely with a 2-handed weapon.

Are you sure about that? What other skills are you going to train besides melee skills?

I strongly suggest at least some archery or magic skills.

It is to my understanding that a large portion of the Duchy is going with magic and/or archery, so a dedicated melee soldier on the front could possibly be an asset if he has focused much of his time to improving melee-related skills. It is also to my understanding that there are various different combat, melee, and weapon skills, and that becoming very proficient in melee may require skilling up lots of different skills.

I am not too interested in archery, but I will definitely be taking up some magic, at the very least. Magic can be an asset no matter what weapon you're using.
