A villein is a tenant of a feudal landholder. It is synonymous with a serf . Most of the members of all the Hyperion clans are of this class, and support their respective clans by harvesting mesne land for their lords and paying an income tax. The Hyperion Royal Court refers to all serfs in all shires collectively as coloni. Coloni are usually allowed to voluntarily enlist in the military in order to lessen their manorial obligations to their liege lords. In the military, coloni are eligible for no ranks other than pedus, miles and serviens.
