Just as a villein must pay a tax to his lord, the gentry must pay taxes to the Duke. One can become a member of the gentry through remarkable military or civil service. The gentry include: The King, Dukes, Barons knights, baronets, bishops and esquires. His Grace and His Majesty are also members of the gentry. The gentry also fill specialized civil roles.
