Some own large tracks of land called “fiefs”, which they oversee and which operate as semi-independent communities. They will fill the top tier positions in the government and military. Just as a villein must pay a tax to his lord, the gentry must pay taxes to the Duke. One can become a member of the gentry through remarkable military or civil service. The gentry include: The King, Dukes, Barons knights, baronets, bishops and esquires. His Grace and His Majesty are also members of the gentry. The gentry also fill specialized civil roles.
